After graduating, he was commissioned as a reserve infantry officer into the U.S. Army National Guard. In 2004, he along with his unit served as an infantry platoon leader in Guantánamo Bay, Cuba. After returning from Cuba, he also volunteered to serve in Baghdad, Iraq, and Samarra, Iraq.
After he returned from Iraq, Hegseth worked at the Manhattan Institute for Policy Research. He quit the conservative think tank in 2007 and worked for Vets For Freedom as executive director until 2012. While working on Vets For Freedom, he was also a Fox News Channel military analyst. Furthermore, he is working as an author of many editorials in The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, New York Post, and The Washington Times.
